A little bit of Mississippi pageant history

I found this terrific article on www.tftj.com with some interesting trivia about the Miss Mississippi and Miss America pageant over the years.

Past miss ms

The Mississippi state pageant started in 1934, has been held in Vicksburg since 1958.

Mississippi has had four Miss America winners. And the first two were back-to-back winners. Then the third one, came exactly 20 years later. The last winner came six year later in 1986.

They have finished in the top 5 thirteen times….. 1st RU : 1949, 4th RU : 1953, 1st RU : 1965, 1st RU : 1967, 3rd RU : 1970, 2nd RU (tie) : 1980, 2nd RU : 1982, 3rd RU : 1983, 2nd RU : 1984, 4th RU : 1987, 4th RU : 1991, 2nd RU : 1997, 3rd RU : and 2000, 3rd RU.  In 2007, Taryn Foshee came very close to becoming the thirteenth Mississippi representative to wear the national crown when she finished as 3rd runner-up.

Mississippi has also made the semi-finalist eight times…. 1981, 1985, 1988, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002. They have also place in the quarter-finalist twice when Becky Pruett made it in 2001 and 2008 when Kimberly Morgan placed.

At the Miss America pageant, Mississippi representatives have captured an amazing 12 Preliminary Swimsuit Awards. Mississippi representatives have also captured a number of Preliminary and Non-Finalist Talent award as well.

In State Pageant History, Hattiesburg is home to nine Miss Mississippis; more than any other city/town.

Five Miss Mississippi’s went on to compete for the title of Miss USA representing the Magnolia State. Jennifer Adcock (’02) finished in the top ten at Miss USA in 2005 and Kathy Manning (’84) finished in the top ten in 1987.

As Miss Magnolia, Brittainy is one of four contestants sponsored by Cherryl’s Bridal  / Cherryl’s Prom and Pageant.   Brittainy is completely attired by Cherryl’s, has been a joy to work with and we couldn’t be happier or more proud of her outstanding performance.

For the first time in years, no contestant for Miss Mississippi this year won more than one preliminary competition.

In Thursday night’s competition, the final night of the preliminaries in the road to the crowning of Miss Mississippi 2008 on Saturday night, Miss Magnolia Brittainy Childers, 24, of Wren, captured the talent tops. The four-year pageant veteran will receive a $300 scholarship.

Miss Rankin County Crystal Flores, 19, of Brandon, won the third preliminary in swimwear. She will receive a $200 scholarship.

Childers, who is returning to the pageant after a two-year hiatus, sang “Unchained Melody” for her win.

“I’ve been singing ‘Unchained Melody’ since I was 13,” she said. “I told my grandfather that if I ever came back to Miss Mississippi that’s what I’d sing.”

Childers is a graduate of Mississippi State University. She received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management and is now an assistant marketing director for University Management.

She left the pageant for a few years so that she “could come here with no regrets,” she said.

“I’m just ecstatic, to be honest,” Childers said.

Check her out dancing in the long red dress — doesn’t she look like she’s having a blast!

For 51 years, Vicksburg has played host to the Miss Mississippi Pageant, lending its volunteers and city to the influx of contestants and their families. Until this pageant, a local resident represented the city in the pageant as Miss Vicksburg.

Instead, this year, the city is lending nine of its men to be ballroom dancers and partners to the 45 contestants.

“I love the idea of local business people, especially business leaders, being involved in this,” said Rob Ware, owner of downtown hotel, lounge and sports bar and grille development The Ware House.

Ware said the idea was pitched as a “Dancing With the Stars”-type endeavor.

“I think it’s important to support the pageant. The pageant brings really good quality people to the community,” he said.

The men, who have dubbed themselves the Ballroom Men, dance with the contestants throughout the production and even give the contestants “dance cards” - their on-stage question.

A tie in talent marked the second night of preliminary competition during the 51st Miss Mississippi Pageant in Vicksburg.

Miss Tupelo Meredith Beeman, 20, of Tupelo, and Miss Mississippi Coast Marie Wicks, 19, of Ocean Springs, tied for the pageant’s second preliminary talent awards. They will each receive a $300 scholarship for the talent win.

Miss Gulf Coast Christine Kozlowski, 19, of D’Iberville, won the second preliminary in swimwear. She will receive a $200 scholarship.

Beeman performed a ballet en pointe to “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”
“It’s a very familiar tune and so it’s easy for the audience to get behind,” she said.

[06/25/08]

Two pageant veterans took home the honors Tuesday in the 2008 Miss Mississippi Pageant’s first night of preliminary competition at the Vicksburg Convention Center. It is the pageant’s 51st year in Vicksburg.

Third-year competitor Miss Mississippi State University Corie Stanford won Tuesday’s preliminary talent award by singing “Time to Say Goodbye.”

“I thought it was beautiful,” she said about why she chose the Sarah Brightman song. “It moved me.”

The song, from an opera, was partially in Italian, which made it a challenge, 21-year-old Stanford said.

Stanford competed for the Miss Mississippi title as Miss Itawamba Community College in 2006 and Miss Tupelo in 2007, placing in the Top 10 both years. She received a preliminary talent award in 2006.

45 Contestants Arriving Today for Miss Mississippi Scholarship Pageant 2008 Week

IMG_1078

The time has finally come.  We’ve been running around like crazy, ensuring dresses are perfect fits, interview and swim suits are ready to go and that everything and everyone is where it needs to be when it needs to be there.

If you’ve never been behind the scenes of a pageant like this you’d likely be in for a surprise.

So much work goes into it while at this same time these girls are keeping their platforms active, excercising like fiends, training for perfection in talent, boning up for interview and generally also trying to deal with college classes, friends, families, boyfriends, etc..

We’ve even had two of our girls with very serious family illnesses right at pageant time.

I have to admit that I’ve looked down my nose at pageants in the past and even thought what ditzy, ridiculous things they are.   The longer I work with Cherryl and the more I participate in the behind the scenes of what these girls have to do to win — and the scholarships they win and good work they do along the way — I’m being won over.  It’s really not all about a pretty face.  (whisper… and I was a bit hard to convince)

Don’t let yourself be fooled by those pretty faces.  If they’ve made it to that stage — they’re tough!

45 contestants arriving today for Miss Mississippi 2008 week

By Emily Henry

[06/22/08]

Forty-five Miss Mississippi 2008 contestants will register at the Vicksburg Convention Center this morning, and, on Saturday night, one will be the 51st Miss Mississippi crowned in Vicksburg.

A whirl of activities is planned for this week, including three nights of preliminary competition, a ball, a parade, the Miss Mississippi mural unveiling, autograph parties and the final televised night of competition in which the winner will be revealed and crowned. The final night’s competition and crowning will be broadcast on WLBT TV-3.

The Miss Mississippi Pageant and its parent Miss America Pageant are scholarship pageants. Last year, Miss Mississippi gave $666,000 in cash and in-kind scholarships to contestants. One major hallmark of the state pageant is that every contestant is awarded some scholarship money. Last year, each contestant was awarded at least $1,300.

Of the 45 contestants this year, 23 have previous pageant experience: 19 through the Miss Mississippi pageant and four through the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen pageant. Of the 19 returning, three placed in the Top 10 in 2007 and three placed in the Top 10 the year before.

Miss Alcorn County, Alison Parson — Sponsored by Cherryl’s Prom and Pageant

Miss alcorn county

ALISON PARSON – MISS ALCORN COUNTY

HOBBIES:  Singing, playing guitar, writing, tennis, crocheting, shopping and traveling

WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL AND UNIQUE:  I don’t think that there is any person in this world that can say they have walked a day in my shoes!  My life has truly been filled with miracles and blessings.  Not many people have seen the things I have seen, and I thank God everyday that He continues to bless me with such a beautiful life.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?  In order to be irreplaceable…one must be different!!!  This always reminds me to pursue my own paths and stay true to the person God has made me.  I truly believe that each of us is filled with special talents, but it is up to us to decide what we will do with them.

NAME ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT.  I cannot live without my guitar!!!  It is such an outlet for me to express emotions, relieve stress, and cope with everyday life circumstances.  It was passed on to me by my father…and I taught myself how to play.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST UNEXPECTED MOMENT?  The Most unexpected moment in my life to date was in September of 2006.  I was canoeing with my friends when a storm swept through and forced us off of the water.  As I was beaching my canoe, a tree snapped in half and crashed down the cliff crushing me beneath. I was air-evacuated and sustained severe injuries to the head and body.  This was a definitive point in my life and I knew I would never be the same.  This unexpected moment taught me to value the life I have been given and cherish each moment that passes.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET WISH?  My secret wish is to sing a duet with Faith Hill at the “Stars Oer Mississippi” concert!!!  I absolutely love her music and what better place to join two Mississippi girls!

Miss Magnolia, Brittainy Childers — Sponsored by Cherryl’s Prom and Pageant

Miss Magnolia

BRITTAINY CHILDERS – MISS MAGNOLIA

HOBBIES:  I enjoy singing, giving makeovers, traveling, watching movies and collecting “Wizard of Oz” memorabilia.

WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL AND UNIQUE?

One thing that makes me unique is that I can yodel.  I discovered I had this unusual talent whenever I was thirteen years old.  I was so determined to sing LeAnn Rimes’ hit song “Blue” that I practiced yodeling daily.  Little did I know that less than a year later I would be awarded “Most Professional” in New York City at Talent America for a performance that included yodeling!

NAME ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?

Having Jesus Christ as my Heavenly Father is one thing I absolutely cannot live without.  Knowing that He is always there watching guiding me through every walk of life is such a tremendously humbling feeling.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST UNEXPECTED MOMENT?

My most unexpected moment came three days after September 11, 2001, when the principal of my high school personally asked me to sing the National Anthem at that weekend’s school football game.  I was so touched by this request.  That night everyone on the field and in the stands was given a candle to light during the Anthem.  I sang as my eyes filled with tears thinking about the many lives lost just a few days earlier.  This is truly a moment I will never forget.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET WISH?

My secret wish is to meet and have a conversation with living legend Aretha Franklin.  I have always been a huge fan of her music.  Her voice is so powerful and unique that she is an absolute pleasure to listen to.  I wouldn’t mind performing with her either.  Hey, if I’m going to dream, I might as well dream big!

Miss Historic Crossroads, Melissa King — Sponsored by Cherryl’s Prom and Pageant

Miss historic crossroads

MELISSA KING, MISS HISTORIC CROSSROADS

HOBBIES:  My hobbies include playing board games with my friends, scrap booking, shopping on Ebay, watching movies of all sorts, and learning to drive on the snow in Michigan.

NAME ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT.  I’ve always been one for keeping appointments in order, being very responsive to emails, returning calls, and just being organized in general.  I recently upgraded my cell phone to a BlackBerry and that little guy keeps me in line, planned and ready to go all the time.  It’s crazy but I really love getting notices when I have e-mails. There is no way I could live without my little wonder phone.

WHO IS YOUR MOST VALUED ROLE MODEL AND WHY?

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Conner has been a role model to me.  As America’s first female Supreme Court Justice she has been a constant source of inspiration.  I always enjoy reading court cases she has written.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO DATE?

Without a doubt, finishing my first semester of law school has been my biggest accomplishment to date.  It was such a rewarding experience that I gained so much from.  Soon I hope to say that graduating from law school is my biggest accomplishment and then passing the bar.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET WISH?

My secret wish is to travel to Fairmount, Indiana, for the James Dean Festival.  James Dean is my favorite actor and I’ve always wanted to experience the event (which marks the anniversary of his death)in person.  I’ve been to the museum before but I think it would be remarkable to be there with thousands of fans from all over the world gathered to celebrate the life and memory of Hollywood’s rebel.

Miss Heritage, Kelly Nicole Langford — Sponsored by Cherryl’s Prom and Pageant

Miss heritage

KELLY LANGFORD – MISS HERITAGE

HOBBIES:  My hobbies include singing, dancing, cheer-leading, working out, shopping, spending time with family and friends and attending Ole Miss athletic events.

WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL AND UNIQUE?

What makes me special and unique is my determination and drive.  For as long as I can remember, I have been told if you are passionate about something, keep pursuing it until you achieve it.

WHO IS YOUR MOST VALUED ROLE MODEL AND WHY?

Without question, my grandfather is my most valued role model!  He is such an amazing man.  In spite of major health problems, he never misses a singing engagement, cheer-leading competition or pageant.  He is like the root at the bottom of a tree.  You may not always be able to see the root: but if it weren’t there, that tree couldn’t live.  He is so incredible wise and selfless.  If I find in my future mate half of my grandfather’s attributes, I will be a huge winner!

WHAT IS THE BEST COMPLIMENT YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

After being named Most Beautiful at Madison Central High School, my friend, Katie, told me that I was the most deserving girl on the stage.  In an unexpected letter I received the following day, she said I was not only beautiful on the outside, but I was beautiful on the inside as well.  She said I was genuine.  This meant so much to me because I have always been taught “pretty is as pretty does”.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET WISH?

My secret wish is to meet Martina McBride!  She is such a talented, inspirational and selfless woman!  She doesn’t get caught up in being a celebrity.  She is very down to earth and spends a lot of her hard-earned money and time working with charities and helping people in need.
